Dear Mr Nkumise.
This problem has been reported since 17 December 2017 on Matlosana Problem Reporting & Resolution Hub. No permanent solution has been found up to date. Manholes in street at Church and Pannetjie, Du Plooy str, Stilfontein have bee removed. Holes are open and risk to road-users. Sewerage still running over at these 3 manholes. This report has also been sent to Provincial Dept of Water & Sanitation and as it is a huge contaminant to our natural water resources PLEASE NOTE In terms of the National Water Act, 36 of 1998, read with the National Environmental Management Act, 107 of 1998, the pollution of a water resource is a criminal offense. The present situation regarding sewage leaks in Matlosana is unacceptable and Matlosana Hub, on behalf of the community, requests the following: 1) We wish to engage with the relevant department on the measures your department proposes to implement to ensure that this situation is rectified as soon as possible. 2)) We accordingly request that you provide us with a response on what steps are currently being taken by your department to address our concerns as set out above. If the illegal sewage pollution, as mentioned above, is not rectified within the proposed time frame, being 10 (ten) days after receipt of this letter, Matlsona Hub will seek other remedies, including legal action, to protect the interests of our members and the public of Matlosana. (Local authorities can be held criminally liable for actions that affect human health or cause pollution. Local authorities can also be held civilly liable in matters related to the operation, closure and rehabilitation of dumps and the remediation of contaminated land for urban development.) VERY URGENT ATTENTION NEEDED FOR THIS COMPLAINT.
